West Country turns to Novell

Part of Cornwall county council has jumped to Novell in a weekend. Cornwall's health infomatics service, which serves more than 12,000 health professionals throughout the county has shifted its communications and remote access infrastructure software to Novell's suites. Motorola shows off Linux phone at CeBIT

Motorola uses CeBIT industry show to debut Linux phone. Mobile phone manufacturer has demonstrated its A760 smart phone - the world's first Linux-based handset with full Java support. Music downloads to count towards record industry gongs

Downloads will now count towards the commemorative discs awarded to artists to recognise high sales, the UK record industry's main body announced today. Discs are presented for both single and album sales as follows: singles - silver 200,000, gold 400,000, platinum 600,000; albums - silver 60,000, gold 100,000, platinum 300,00. The BPI said that music DVDs will also be included: titles shipping 25,000 copies or more will be eligible for a gold award, with a platinum award for 50,000 sales. ...more

Waterstone's ditches Amazon to go it alone

Waterstone's has severed its link with Amazon and will launch its own online bookshop later this year. HMV, which owns the high street bookseller, said that the company had underestimated the impact that the Internet would have on its business. 'The Amazon partnership has been good but when we first entered into it we felt that online sales would not get to more than 10 per cent of the UK books market,' said chief executive Alan Giles. ...more

Monotype acquires font rival

Monotype has acquired one of its major rivals in the font business, Linotype. The Germany-based owner of classic typefaces including Helvetica, Frutiger and Optima will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Monotype Imaging. Monotype believes that the combination of Linotype's library and Monotype's font technology will help to fulfil the increasingly sophisticated font requirements of consumer electronics markets. ...more
