ISPs go back to the future

Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) is back in the spotlight after Trade and Industry Committee's UK Broadband Market report casts doubt on the future of DataStream. The report damned BT's DataStream product as having gained little confidence from ISPs: 'The danger is that, because of a lack of confidence rather than a lack of demand, there is insufficient uptake of DataStream and it will ultimately be allowed to wither.' In short, because, BT was forced - rather than chose - to offer DataStream to create competition, ISPs are not convinced that telecom regulator Ofcom's will ensure that BT sets its prices at a point that makes it a commercially viable for them. ...more

SCO pulls plug on Sequent licence

Adobe threatens China withdrawal

Adobe may stop localising its products for China and other Asian countries due to the high rates of piracy in the region. Speaking in San Francisco this week - and quoted in the South China Morning Post - Adobe chief executive Bruce Chizen said, 'It is a simple business decision. It costs $750,000 to localise an application for the Chinese language and if we are only going to make $500,000 in revenue it does not make sense for us to go ahead. ...more

CeBIT 2007: Chip makers strike auto deals for in-car tech

Intel and Infineon Technologies AG have announced partnerships with BMW and Hyundai on Thursday, reflecting the growing importance of technology in cars. German chipmaker Infineon and Korean carmaker Hyundai said they would cooperate in the development of automotive electronics and opened a joint innovation centre in Seoul. The companies said in a statement they would develop automotive electronic systems for Hyundai and Kia brand vehicles and enhance Hyundai's current systems. ...more
