Spam kingpin seized in the US

The FBI has arrested a spammer who was generating multimillion dollar revenues through his operations. Thought to be responsible for more than a billion spam mails sent to AOL accounts, Christopher Smith (aka 'Rizler') was arrested just after midnight as he got off a flight from the Dominican Republic last Thursday and is expected to appear in court today. Smith had been operating out of the Dominican Republic ever since a US federal judge shut down his Burnsville Internet and Xpress Pharmacy Direct businesses and ordered him to stop selling drugs. ...more

BT lethargy deters overseas broadband

Two major US Internet service providers have been put off introducing broadband Internet services to the UK, due to BT's delay in unbundling the local telephone loop. Global Crossing and WorldCom were to introduce digital subscriber line (DSL) facilities that would compete with BTOpenworld's ADSL service. WorldCom in particular was a likely candidate, having being heavily involved in discussions on how BT would open its infrastructure to competitors. ...more

VIA puts security at the core of new processor

VIA technologies has announced its C5J 'Esther' processor core, aimed at mobile and embedded devices, with support for a range of industry standard security features. 'Our approach to processor design allows small, fanless devices to carry out the most demanding security operations while simultaneously processing today's increasingly sophisticated digital entertainment applications,' said Glenn Henry, President of Centaur Technology - the VIA division that designed the new core.
