BT charges users over its mistakes

British Telecom is to bill thousands of Internet users after discovering that it had been inadvertently providing them with truly free Internet access. Some of BT's telephone exchanges had failed to recognise the 0845 numbers used by subscribers to connect, and instead registered them as dialling a free 0800 number. Overclocked PCs blamed for Windows crashes

The practice of overclocking PCs has been blamed for an unusually high number of reported Windows crashes. Raymond Chen, a Microsoft Windows developer, has revealed that Microsoft received a series of crash reports containing errors which, he said, 'made no sense whatsoever'. If you're looking for a Christmas present for a computer-using friend, beware of the host of misleading security applications around warning of infected systems and promising a clean up, at a price. Antispyware company Sunbelt software is picking up new sites, designed to dupe users into downloading and paying for software that is ineffective as a security tool and often a threat in itself.
