No sign of ad upturn for AOL

AOL says it expects any increases in subscription revenues to be offset by a drop in advertising revenues by as much as 50 per cent during 2003. The drop is largely due to pre-booked ads not delivering the revenues first anticipated. This, balanced with the predicted income from new advertising will put revenues for 2003 roughly par with those of 2002, says the company. ...more

Microsoft takes aim at Lindows 'free PC' deal

Microsoft and Lindows CEO Michael Robertson have got into a slanging match over a Lindows offer to Californians who claim compensation under an antitrust settlement. Lindows has set up a site to make it easy for people to claim and in return receive a free PC and Lindows software. The spat started when, as part of Redmond's class action antitrust settlement in the state of California, Microsoft agreed to pay $1 billion in compensation to people who bought MS software, between February 18, 1995 to December 15, 2001. ...more

Toast 7 Titanium to support Blu-ray burning

Roxio has announced the addition of support for Blu-ray disc burning in OEM versions of Toast 7 Titanium. The software will be included with BD drives that are expected to ship within the next three months, and provides the ability to store up to 50GB of data on recordable (BD-R) and rewritable (BD-RE) discs. Casio Computers and NEC have decided to pool resources into producing colour thin film transistor (TFT), liquid crystal displays (LCD) for mobile devices. With predictions of increased demand due to 3G mobile phone networks and the rising popularity of handhelds, each company will supply its technology to the other. Casio will handle the backlight colour TFT LCD technology, while NEC will deal with reflective colour TFT LCD technology. ...more
