BT wins ?620 million NHS contract to put medical records online

The familiar cabinets of buff coloured folders containing medical records will be no more by 2010, the Government has announced. Instead it has awarded a ?620 million contract to BT to store all 50 million NHS patients 'Care Records' in a secure central database and available to all 30,000 GPs and 270 NHS trusts. The care records will contain all relevant information and medical history of the patient and can be called up from anywhere instead of the current situation whereby if someone is admitted to hospital, the doctors have no immediate access to their local GP's records. ...more

Apple attacks Microsoft settlement

Apple has attacked the $1 billion settlement proposed my Microsoft in response to more than 100 anti-trust lawsuits that accused the software giant of overpricing its software. Apple's lawyers filed a 36 page brief with the US District Court for the District of Maryland which challenged that, 'Every part of the settlement must be carefully examined and changed where necessary to eliminate those aspects that will irresistibly compel schools to adopt Microsoft products.' Apple CEO Steve Jobs added to the brief in a statement saying, 'we're baffled that a settlement imposed against Microsoft for breaking the law should allow, even encourage, them to unfairly make inroads into education - one of the few markets left where they don't have monopoly power. ...more

Vonage faces injunction against Voip tech use

A federal judge has said he will issue an injunction barring Vonage from using Internet phone call technology patented by Verizon Communications. He will sign the order in two weeks. Vonage shares fell sharply after the ruling, falling 16. ...more
