Oftel states mobile prices still too high

Telecoms regulator Oftel has concluded, in a new report, that the price of mobile phone calls is too high, and it is introducing price controls that should shave off 20 per cent by the end of four years. In a bid to keep the market as competitive as possible, Oftel will introduce price controls of -12 per cent RPI (retail price inflation) per year for the amount network operators charge each other for connecting to their networks. These controls extend to all four current operators: Vodafone, BT Cellnet (now mm02), Orange and One2One, with Hutchison 3G expected to enter the market in the middle of next year. ...more

The future for most B2B exchanges isn't good, says IDC, but some will survive and prosper. According to the research firm, many of the B2B marketplaces that launch will close down and some planned exchanges won't even make it that far. Three quarters of IT security experts distrust Microsoft security

A survey of IT security experts has revealed that 74 per cent have security concerns over Microsoft's products, yet 89 per cent deploy applications that are critical to their company on the platform. Furthermore, the same percentage of distrustful experts have suffered an attack in the past year that exploited flaws in the Windows platform, yet 40 per cent say they have no intention of improving security arrangements on their Windows deployments themselves. UPDATED: EU threatens Microsoft with new antitrust penalties

Microsoft may face a new kind of antitrust punishment from the European Union if the company, already hit by multi-million-dollar fines, continues to defy it, the organisation's top competition official has hinted. The EU's executive Commission has said Microsoft set unreasonably high prices to discourage would-be competitors from making server software. The company responded on Monday that it would request no oral hearing on the allegation, which could result in daily fines of up to €3 million. ...more
