IOC stands firm on online sports coverage

Any hopes that some sort of strategy for licensing out Internet broadcasting rights of the Olympics would emerge from the IOC World Conference on Sport and New Media in Lausanne, Switzerland, were dashed today as the body confirmed it would keep a tight hold on rights for the foreseeable future. Dick Pound, IOC Internet Committee Chairman, said that the IOC's policy on audio and video rights would remain unchanged for Olympic events until after 2008, meaning that live Web casting is unlikely. The problem is that the IOC distributes rights country by country, and a solution needs to be found how to prevent companies with broadcast rights in other countries from feeding coverage to their overseas audiences and coming into conflict with other media firms holding exclusive coverage rights to the same countries. ...more

Sdbot malware sees McAfee issue its 100,000th signature file

Vincent Gullotto, VP of McAfee's AVERT virus response team, described the addition as a 'milestone', although the virus that garnered such an accolade was far from unique. Indeed, it was yet another variant of the Sdbot malware - which allows an attacker to control infected computers remotely. Gullotto said that more than 50 per cent of the additions to the McAfee database so far this year have been definitions for variants of Sdbot, Agobot and other bots. ...more

It wasn't just the weather that was scorching on Wednesday. The traffic to weather sites also hit new peaks as overheating Brits logged in to check the forecasts. As the thermometer hit 36 degrees Celsius near Gatwick, traffic to the Hitwise News & Media - Weather category nearly doubled compared to the previous week and the category rose to capture more than one per cent of all UK Internet visits. ...more
