Quark 6 demos released

Quark has made demo versions of QuarkXPress 6, its market leading DTP application, available for download. Among the software's new features are collaborative working on the same document, new Web layout tools, direct PDF export, multiple undos and full-resolution previews. The folowing limitations apply to the demos: all output will have 'QuarkXPress Demo' printed on it; printouts are limited to a maximum of five pages; Mac demos can only print to a PostScript printer; the Save, Save as, Save Page as EPS, New Library and Collect for Output commands are disabled;all Web document previews will have a 'QuarkXPress Demo' watermark embedded in all pictures; the Export HTML function is disabled; and limited language support (online demo only). ...more

Sony is to launch what it claims is the world's first IP-based video call service. Based on its own technology and that of GlowPoint, the company says it can offer video calls to anywhere in the world. Security threat from open software

Open source software used in Unix and Linux systems is now the main source of security vulnerabilities, according to a new report. Microsoft products are no longer subject to the greatest number of security advisories published by CERT, the Computer Emergency Response Team. Adobe chief says Intel optimisation is no trivial pursuit

The CEO of Adobe has warned that migrating the company's applications to Apple's imminent Intel-based hardware is not as easy as Apple CEO Steve Jobs suggested when he announced the change earlier this year. Bruce Chizen said it's not just a question of compiling the software, you have to test it and in Adobe's case that can take three to four months. 'Steve likes to trivialise the process and make it seem easy, but moving the apps over is not that easy' he said. ...more
