BT launches its first commercial voice over IP service

BT has launched its first commercial voice over IP service to its customers. Together with Yahoo Messenger, BT Communicator is said to allow customers to manage all their communications from phone calls to email, webcam and IM from their PC. BT Communicator is a free download which enables PC users to make to free phone calls to another PC or to landline and mobile phones anywhere in the world for the price of a local call. ...more

Symantec drops Norton Utilities for Mac

Symantec has stopped development of Norton Utilities for the Mac, according to a report by The Mac Observer. The report quotes Nancy Mohler, Symantec's senior product manager, who insists that the copmpany remains committed to the platform and that its other Mac products - Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall - will continue. 'The decision was based solely on the strategic desire to focus Macintosh development resources on Internet security solutions,' Mohler said. ...more

Micro Warehouse Euro arm safe

The European arm of Micro Warehouse is not affected by the financial troubles that have beset the American company of the same name, it said today. Dutch-based Micro Warehouse Holding BV, with subsidiaries in Holland, Germany, France, and UK including MacWarehouse and inmac, will continue to trade as before. The US company recently agreed the sale of some of its assets to rival reseller CDW Corporation and has just filed for Chapter 11 status, the equivalent of going into administration in the UK. ...more

Google says how it'll splash the R&D cash

Google is planning to invest around 70 per cent of this year's R&D cash in improving it's existing search and advertising business. In a conference call with analysts CEO Eric Schmidt said whilst Google's ad services were popular with medium sized businesses it needed to do better with large accounts and smaller businesses. To improve its services to larger companies, Google has already expanded its direct sales force and put in place better tracking procedures. ...more
