Broadreach and Virgin agree on new Net train company

Broadreach, the Wi-Fi hotspot operator, has announced a further tie up with Virgin. As well as Broadreach receiving extra funding, the deal involves the launch of Broadreach Train Services Limited (BTSL), a specialist subsidiary to provide on-train Internet access. Critical vulnerability found in Netscape browser

A highly critical vulnerability has been discovered in the Netscape Web browser, which could compromise a user's system. A boundary error in GIF image processing can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted image. Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code. ...more

UK workers too busy to care about computer security, says new study

Ninety per cent of UK workers consider basic email security 'not my job' A survey commissioned by Novell studying 1,000 workers in the UK has revealed many consider themselves too busy or not responsible for the most basic aspects of email security such as whether to open unsolicited mail or execute attachments. Novell classifies these types as BEES (Busy Employees Endangering Security) and ANTS (Apathetic Non-Technical Staff). Most worrying perhaps is that 90 per cent of those surveyed felt they had no part to play in preventing the spread of viruses and nearly two thirds of respondents actually forward spam to friends and colleagues without thinking. ...more

Google in plan to scan and index some of the world's top libraries

Search engine Google has teamed up with some of the world's most prestigious libraries in a plan to put their entire contents - including their rarest books - online. Amongst the libraries included are Oxford University's Bodleian Library of 19th Century works, Harvard, Stanford, the University of Michigan and New York's Public Library.
