Talks between Microsoft and the European Commission over a settlement that would satisfy the EC's investigation into anticompetitive practices have broken down. Instead, Commissioner Mario Monti is to recommend that the EC adopts the proposals that may see penalties running into hundreds of millions of euros, that the company share some proprietary information on the Windows code with rivals to ensure interoperability and to introduce versions of its operating systems without Media Player. Monti said in a statement: 'In the end, I had do decide what was best for competition and consumers in Europe. ...more

Gates - Attempts to censor the Internet will fail

Bill Gates has told an Internet technology forum that government attempts to censor the Internet will fail. Although blogs and websites can be blocked, he said, it is not possible to prevent the dissemination of information via email. 'You may be able to take a very visible website and say that something shouldn't be there, but if there's a desire by the population to know something, it's going to get out,' he said. ...more
