Compaq hitches wagon to Itanium

Intel is getting a huge vote of confidence from Compaq in the form of a cross-licensing deal that will see Intel's Itanium processors eventually used in all Compaq's servers. In return, Intel has agreed to buy Compaq's Alpha server chip technology. All staff currently working on Alpha at Compaq will be employed by Intel although an upcoming Alpha chip, the EV7, will still be released by Compaq and an upgraded AlphaServer GS series will be available in the summer. ...more

Apple denies iTunes sales slump

Apple has rejected a report that music sales through its iTunes Store have slumped by 65 per cent since January. Spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said that the figure, from research firm Forrester, 'is simply incorrect'; sales are up 75 per cent on 2005 and Apple, with six per cent of the market, is now the country's fourth largest music retailer. Sun launches two new servers

Sun Microsystems has announced the launch of two new servers. The new machines are based around the UltraSparc T1 processors formerly codenamed 'Niagara' that the company announced last month. The new servers, known as T1000 and T2000 are aimed at filling the racks of ISPs and are claimed to offer both better performance as well as lower power consumption. ...more

SanDisk demos 2GB Memory Stick PRO Storage Card

Flash memory supplier, SanDisk Corporation has announced a 2Gb SanDisk Memory Stick PRO, which is the world's highest highest capacity available in this format. Sandisk, which developed the memory stick alongside Sony, claims that Memory Stick PRO-enabled devices can capture and play back DVD-quality video in real time as well as store multiple hours of CD-quality music. The new cards are also said to have security features which prevent data from being lost or erased by accidentally removing the card while it is in use. ...more
