ICANN asks Verisign to suspend Site Finder redirects ICANN, The US Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, on Friday asked Verisign to drop its controversial move to redirect all mistyped and unregistered .net and .com URLs to its own Site Finder search service. ...more IBM, Infineon to research new high-speed memory IBM has teamed up with chip developers Macronix and Infineon to form a joint research project to investigate the possibilities of a new form of computer memory technology known as phase-change memory (PCM). PCM stores data by changing the state of a special material from an amorphous to a crystalline structure, rather than storing data as an electrical charge. Although still in the experimental stage, the technology could eventually be used for high speed, high density data storage. ...more Intel earnings fall - lowers sales guidance Intel has reported its second quarter financial results and falling sales, below seasonal patterns, has left Wall Street nonplussed. Fresh from unveiling dual core desktop and server chips - in the form of the Core 2 Duo and the dual-core Itanium 2 and Xeon - the company revealed it was feeling the pressure from its rival AMD. The figures, for April to June, stand at a net income of $855m with earnings per share of $0. ...more Microsoft Patch Tuesday counts eight critical flaws Microsoft has released 12 security bulletins for June - eight of them critical. They affect Internet Explorer 5.01 to 6, Media Player 7. ...more Toshiba, SanDisk promising new era of gigabyte memory chips Toshiba and SanDisk are promising a new era of gigabyte memory chips following the unveiling of an 8Gb NAND flash memory chip at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) 2005 in San Francisco. Built with 70nm process technology, the new NAND flash memory is based on multi-level cell technology that allows two bits of data to be stored in one memory cell and hence doubling the memory capacity. A combination of burst mode techniques and high read bandwidth delivers a write speed of 6MB/sec and a maximum read speed of 60MB/sec, which, Toshiba and SanDisk say, is 40 per cent faster than today's designs. ...more |
