i-mode rolls into Europe Today marks the first roll out of NTT DoCoMo's i-mode service in Europe, courtesy of KPN Mobile, part-owned by DoCoMo. Germany is the first to enjoy an i-mode service, with the network made official today, and punters able to sign up for a handset and subscription from 8 March through KPN Mobile subsidiary E-plus. The service will launch on the high street on 16 March. ...more AOL employee sells 92 million email addresses to spammer An AOL employee has been arrested and charged with stealing 92 million email addresses and selling them on to spammers according to the LA Times. 24 year old Jason Smathers, a software engineer with the company and an accomplice, Sean Dunaway an email marketer, have been accused of breaking fraud and anti-spam laws. Federal investigators say that Smathers sold the email addresses of every AOL subscriber as of May 2003 to Dunaway who used the list to promote his online gambling business as well as selling the names on to other spammers. ...more Yahoo! introduces My Web 2.0 Yahoo! has introduced a new concept of community web searching. It describes the decision, which fined the company ?333mn and imposed tough rules on shipping Media Player with Windows and licensing its server protocols, as 'a troubling departure from international legal rules designed to encourage innovation through well-established intellectual property rights'. It says the EC has: invented 'new law in an effort to justify unprecedented regulatory intervention', in arriving at its decision; included measures rejected by the DoJ in the US antitrust process; and ignored international obligations set out by the WTO. ...more Uri Geller sued after quashing questioning clip The Electronic Frontier Foundation has sued Uri Geller after he persuaded YouTube to remove a video, which he said violated his copyright. In March, Geller sent a DMCA take-down notice to the Google-owned video sharing website after he discovered that Brian Sapient, a pseudonym, a clip entitled 'Secrets of the Psychics', which challenges his claim that his spoon-bending antics are evidence of psychic powers. YouTube immediately informed Sapient that the video had been removed and his account suspended, which meant that 100 videos he had posed were unavailable for a fortnight. ...more |
