Sun opens code for Looking Glass desktop and other Java tools

Sun has said it will open source the code behind the much-hyped 3D Looking Glass three-dimensional desktop. It is expected to be formally announced at the company's JavaOne conference, which kicks off today in San Francisco. But on a mailing list for the 3D desktop, Kevin Rushforth of Advanced Development Graphics Group revealed on Friday that Java code powering the desktop would be made available under a number of 'open' licences. ...more

Apple's share price takes a tumble

Apple's share price fell by more than five per cent yesterday amid concerns that the company is overvalued. Bear Steams analyst Andy Neff lowered his rating on the stock which was trading at roughly 33 times the forecast average earnings per share. 'Home users should buy Macs' - Sophos

Security firm Sophos is suggesting that users who are concerned about the security of their systems should consider switching to a Mac. 'Macs will continue to be the safer place for computer users for some time to come - something that home users may wish to consider if they're deliberating about the next computer they should purchase' stated Sophos's senior technology consultant, Graham Cluley. The July update of the Sophos Security Threat Management Report notes that while the first malware for Mac OS X was detected in February 2006, it has not spread in the wild and was not the beginning of serious attention from the world's virus authors. ...more
