AOL co-opts PC makers in battle with Microsoft

AOL is out to get its icons on as many Windows desktops as possible, following Microsoft's decision to give PC manufacturers flexibility in deciding which icons will be displayed on new machines. Such flexibility is currently commonplace, with Dell, for instance, carrying an AOL promotion on the desktop of all new computers. Microsoft had planned to put an end to such promotions, by restricting the number of desktop icons on machines shipped with the forthcoming Windows XP operating system, acting on feedback from customers who felt that the desktop had become too cluttered. ...more

Shareholders suit up for class action against AOL

Disgruntled shareholders filed a securities fraud suit against AOL yesterday, alleging the company artificially inflated its revenues for online advertising. The suit is likely to be made a class action that would allow shareholders of AOL common stock (from 19 July 1999) and of stock that was converted to AOL Time Warner (11 Jan to 17 July 2001) to become involved. It centres around 'unconventional' accounting practices, highlighted by a series of reports in the Washington Post, that gave the impression the company was bucking the downwards trend of online advertising revenues as it closed the biggest merger in US history. ...more

Euro police raid 80 homes in crack down on child pornography

An alleged child pornography ring has been smashed according to Europol. A combined operation involving six EU member states searched around 80 house and made a number of arrests. The operation, called 'Icebreaker II' carried out raids in France, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK following investigation and surveilliance of chat rooms and bulletin boards led by Italy's Carabinieri police. ...more

AMD extends Athlon 64 family

AMD has opened 2004 with a new range of Athlon-based processors both for the desktop and the mobile markets. There are three mobile processors in the range; the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processors 3200+, 3000+ and 2800+. The chips feature AMD's PowerNow technology to keep the power consumption down, although we will have to wait for the benchmarks to see how much power is required to drive the 64-bit processor in a notebook environment. ...more
