Web malware explodes

According to IBM research, the amount of malware targeting web browsers exploded in 2006 compared to previous years. The study, carried out by IBM's Internet Security Systems X-Force research team, found that Web-targeted attacks and scripting vulnerabilities saw a massive increase. There were 7,247 vulnerabilities disclosed, and 88 per cent of these were remotely exploitable by hackers. ...more

Tate Modern launches virtual tours

The Tate Online is the online presence of the major UK arts organisation (alongside Tate Britain, Modern, Liverpool and St Ives) and a new interactive tour of Tate Modern has been launched. The feature Explore Tate Modern has been revamped - with aid from its sponsor, BT - for a better virtual cultural experience. Microsoft's Live.com supports Firefox

One week after Microsoft unveiled the Live.com initiative, it has now added support for the open source Firefox browser. This is the first time that the Redmond giant has admitted that Firefox has sufficient market share to warrant its support. ...more

Microsoft Office rival is updated

A beta version of Sun's StarOffice is available for download from the Sun Web site. The software is a "full-featured, low-cost" office productivity suite and although it is from Sun Microsystems it does run on Windows systems (including XP) as well as Linux and Solaris. The main thrust of this version is its use of XML as the default file format for editing and saving files, which enables non platform-specific document handling. ...more

Multivision: administrator appointed

Following the news last week that Multivision Computers had ceased trading, we can now confirm that the Birmingham High Court has appointed insolvency practitioner West Midlands-based Griffin and King as administrator. It's believed huge debts forced Multivision to close and as yet no third party has offered to bail the company out or buy its assets. It's still not clear what will happen to warranty holders or those awaiting new machines but customers are still being advised to write to Multivision's business address at 49-53 High Street, Halesowen, West Midlands B63 3BG. ...more
