Intel Xeon takes aim at blade market

Chip giant Intel is making a concerted effort to win back market share in the lucrative blade server market with the introduction of a new energy efficient dual core Xeon processor. The new chip, known as the Xeon LV, is claimed to be have two- to four-times the performance-per-watt of previous generations of Xeon processors and platforms with a total dissipated power (TDP) of just 31 watts. Intel says the low heat generated makes the new dual core Xeon ideal for a range of high density server configurations including single-height (1U) chassis and blade servers, SAN and NAS solutions and other network infrastructure equipment. ...more

Germans join Japanese in WAP charging

German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom, following the lead given by Japan's NTT DoCoMo, has announced that it will be charging users to access certain Web sites on mobile phones from November, with plans to do the same in the UK in conjunction with One 2 One. The company's mobile Internet portal is set to charge the equivalent of about ?6 for a package of services including sports, financial and music news and a food guide. Further ammunition for those who believe there has been massive over-bidding for 3G licences: the Czech government has now had to backtrack in its national auction. The Czech version of the now-notorious 3G bidding process was effectively boycotted by the leading Czech GSM operators last month, with the initial asking price deemed far too high for the size and maturity of the market. SCO takes Visa, Mastercard and American Express for Unix IP licences. SCO has made its Unix IP licence for Linux available on its website for what it describes as the 'many customers [that] are concerned about using Linux since they have become aware of the allegations that Linux is an unauthorized derivative work of the UNIX operating system'.
