Microsoft digs up zombie network horror

Microsoft has revealed the true scale of the 'zombie' threat in an experiment that has founded 13 investigations into spam operations. The company says it intentionally set up a zombie computer, stuck it online for three weeks and watched what happened. Although the machine was configured so that it wouldn't actually send out any spam itself, it was quickly identified as a new recruit to the zombie networks and enlisted for spamming duties. ...more

Microsoft has proposed that one of its ex-employees be appointed to the three-man team with the task of ensuring the software giant upholds the mandates of the antitrust settlement. Recommendations from both Microsoft and the Justice Department were made yesterday with Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly. Apple sets the stage for DRM-free downloads in iTunes

Apple has released an update to iTunes that adds support for iTunes Plus, the area of the online music store that provides DRM-free, high-bitrate downloads from EMI and other participating record labels. That is not to say that iTunes Plus downloads are now available - they're not. This update simply prepares the iTunes software in advance and revises the iTunes Help files to include an explanation of the forthcoming new service. ...more
