Tetris comes to chip and pin terminals

Researchers at Cambridge University have managed to hack tamper-resistant chip and pin terminals so they can play a game of Tetris. Stephen Murdoch and Saar Drimer, researchers at the Security Group at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory managed to open up the terminal and replace most of the inner workings that control the screen, card reader and keypad. 'Steven suggested that in order to show that it is completely under our control, we should make it play Tetris (similarly to the guys who made a voting machine play chess),' said Drimer on their blog. ...more

Vista under attack as illegal in Europe

A coalition of companies - rivals to Microsoft - allege that Microsoft's new Vista operating system will perpetuate practices found illegal in the European Union nearly three years ago. The group, which includes IBM, Nokia, Sun Microsystems, Adobe, Oracle and Red Hat, said its complaints made last year are yet to be addressed just days before Vista is due for release. The European Commission found in 2004 that Microsoft used its dominance to muscle out RealNetworks and other makers of audio and video streaming software and that it made its desktop Windows deliberately incompatible with rivals' server software. ...more

Alleged Blaster-F author detained

Romanian authorities have apprehended a Romanian student suspected of authoring the recent Blaster-F virus. Although the F variant had not propagated itself to the extent of the original, its creator, 24-year-old Dan Dumitru Ciobanu could still face 15 years in a state prison under Romanian law. As with the US Blaster-B author Jeffrey Lee Parson, Ciobanu helped give the game away with his nickname, which he also used on other documents. ...more
