Toshiba completes dual layer HD DVD recording spec

Toshiba has announced the completion of the specification for dual layer recordable HD DVD discs. Dual layer discs will double the maximum recordable capacity of the format to 30GB, more than the 25GB currently provided by the rival Blu-ray format, although that may increase before the first drives become commercially available. The new HD DVD discs shares key manufacturing processes with the existing DVD-R format including the use of an organic dye as the data storage medium and a spin-coating process for depositing the dye. ...more

Microsoft and Apple face patent lawsuit for auto Web updates

Microsoft and Apple are looking down the wrong end of a patent suit over infringements of a patent on web-enabled software updates. UK company BTG is the worldwide exclusive licensee for the patent, owned by New-York-based Teleshuttle Technologies, whose president and founder Richard Reisman is claimed as the inventor. BTG says that the software giants' operating systems, as well as Microsoft Office, infringe patent number 6,557,054, which was granted 29 April 2003 (although the patent claim originated in the early nineties). ...more

Revenues from paid-for Web content to rise 25 per cent in 2003

Paid-for Internet content is expected to generate more than $2bn in 2003, a rise of 25 per cent on the $1.6bn spent in 2002 according to the latest report from Jupiter Research. The report also predicts that revenues will grow by more than 20 per cent every year at least until 2007. ...more
