Toshiba, NEC to collaborate on 45nm processes

Japanese electronics giants Toshiba and NEC have signed a deal to work together on developing a 45 nanometer production process for the next generation of microelectronics. As Toshiba already has an agreement in place to develop 45nm technology with Sony, the expectation is that NEC engineers will join in the existing effort taking place at Toshiba's Advanced Microelectronics Centre in Yokohama. The hope is that by sharing the huge investments needed to create a commercial production process Japan will be able to overtake Intel and Samsung in chip design. ...more

Novell challenges SCO's slander case

Novell has asked for dismissal of SCO's 'Slander of Title' suit. SCO filed the suit alleging that Novell had made false statements that it owned Unix copyrights and that Novell's public statements caused potential customers to doubt SCO's Unix rights and take their business elsewhere. Novell says in the motion that: 'Without conclusively establishing that it owns the Unix and UnixWare copyrights, SCO cannot show that Novell's statements to the contrary are false, and cannot prevail. ...more

Sony goes organic with new TVs

Sony aims to be first in a new market of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) televisions offering ultra-thin displays Several companies are investing in OLED technology because it can produce bright, colorful images and does not require a backlight as do liquid crystal displays (LCDs), allowing for a thinner panel. OLED panels are also said to be energy-efficient and good at reproducing fast-moving images. At a display forum in Tokyo, customers, suppliers and even rival TV makers turned their backs on 50-inch and bigger TVs to throng before Sony's tiny 11-inch OLED TVs. ...more
