Nasdaq booms in third-ever biggest gain

Technology stocks are back in favour, it seems, as the Nasdaq index rises by its third-biggest gain. Upbeat profit reports Nokia, Microsoft and Sun have more than lifted the gloom generated by the figures from the likes of Apple and Intel and the general pricking of the dot com bubble. OS X to be released in March

Apple will release its new operating system, OS X (that's the number ten), on 24 March. Apple CEO Steve Jobs confirmed the date at the Macworld expo in San Francisco. The top 500 companies in the EU invested a total of €100bn in Research and Development during 2003, new figures from the European Commission reveal, but the figure was down on the previous year.
