Music industry split over online pricing strategies

A split is beginning to emerge at the highest levels of the music industry on both sides of the Atlantic. A little under two weeks ago we reported that some labels wanted to increase wholesale prices - thereby forcing up prices to the end user - in order to grab a greater share of revenues from inline music stores such as iTunes and Napster. UK online ink cartridge reseller Recharge has agreed to stop selling Epson-compatible cartridges after facing legal proceedings. Epson claims that Bolton-based Recharge Inkjet Technologies Limited, which trades under the name CartridgeMonkey.com, will pay it a 'substantial settlement payment' and promise 'not to infringe Epson's patents and registered designs'. ...more

Litigious porn publisher lashes out at Google

Porn publisher Perfect 10 is seeking an injunction against Google to stop it showing thumbnails of its copyright images in search results. The company filed the request in an LA District Court on Wednesday, as part of an ongoing copyright infringement case first brought last November. Perfect 10 alleges the practice involves copying, displaying and distributing thousands of its images, with many of the results linking to third party sites that are also using the images without copyright permission. ...more

School success in auto-SMS of snow closures

After last week's snowfall, thousands of parents across the UK were alerted to school closures by text message or automated voice call, thanks to systems that link to school databases in real time. One such system, Call Parents, sent more than 60,000 text messages and automated phone calls to parents of students at more than 700 schools after wintry weather made travel difficult. Stephen Clarke, managing director of Call Parents, said: 'Our schools appreciate the need to have a system in place for emergency contact with parents, ideal for when snow is heavy and school closures are required. ...more
