US Safety Commission warns: do not use laptops on your lap

We know America can be a litigious and over-cautious society, but confirmation is seemingly provided by a new recommendation from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). In the wake of the recent 'fire hazard' battery recalls, it is now warning: do not use your laptop computer on your lap. The CPSC states that it is aware of at least 47 incidents involving smoke or fire related to laptop computers, between January 2001 and August 2006. ...more

Samsung powers up flash memory laptops

Samsung has unveiled the world's first laptops that store data on NAND flash memory rather than a hard disk drive. Available in Korea from June 2007, the Q30-SSD and Q1-SSD have 32GB of NAND storage providing three times the read speed and one and a half times the write speed compared to HDDs. Samsung says that the portables will boot Windows XP up to 20 to 25 per cent faster than a comparable HDD-based machine. ...more

Asahi team up with Hewlett-Packard

The Asahi Optical Company has announced a new digital, single lens reflex camera for its Pentax range. The company has been reluctant to enter the digital camera market for a while, but after Asahi formed a business alliance with Hewlett-Packard in February two cameras have been launched. The first unit was the Pentax EI-200 that was released in July; this new EI-2000 is the second camera to come out of the partnership. ...more
