Nokia forms mobile coalition

Nokia has joined forces with a number of major technology companies in an effort to create an open framework for allowing mobile phones to connect to networks. Bea, Borland, HP, IBM, Oracle and Sun have joined Nokia to form the Open Mobile Architecture Initiative, which is to exploit Sun's Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition technology (J2EE) as the basis for mobile-based interconnectivity. Ask Jeeves seeks route to the desktop

Internet search company, Ask Jeeves has announced it has bought the privately owned Tukaroo Inc, a company which owns a desktop and network search technology. Founded in 2002, Tukaroo's patented technology is said to allow users to perform sub-second searches of files and their contents on the local hard drive, network, and the Internet as well as offering ways to categorise the results. IBM claims to treble chip speed with 'strained' breakthrough

IBM says that it has developed a technique of using 'strained germanium' which, it claims, will triple the performance of commercial chips. The company says that the new process doesn't require radical new production methods and is compatible with existing CMOS manufacturing processes.
