Website author sues estate of James Joyce

An American academic is suing the estate of Nobel Prize-winning author James Joyce for the right to quote his works on her website. Backed by the Stanford Center for Internet and Society's Fair Use Project, Carol Shloss, acting English professor at Stanford University, is asking the court to rule that she is entitled to quote Joyce's writings under laws that permit the use of copyrighted work where it is done in 'a scholarly transformative manner'. Joyce's estate, which is managed by his grandson, Stephen James Joyce, has refused to let Schloss quote from the Irishman's published works, manuscripts and private letters. ...more
