Amazon rejects Google search info request

Amazon has rejected a request from Google for details about its book search feature. Google says it needs the information in order to fight lawsuits from several major publishers who claim that Google's own book search breaches their copyright. The e-retailer described the request as 'overly broad and unduly burdensome', noting that Google's 6 October subpoena effectively demanded full details of Amazon's book sale business, not merely its search feature. ...more

EU rules to sort out battery waste

The European Parliament has passed a new law governing the usage and disposal of batteries, giving the go-ahead for its adoption by member states over the next 18 months. The parliament has approved a set of proposals agreed in May by the 25 states and the European Commissioner for the Environment, Stavros Dimas. These include strict rules on recycling and on the disposal and re-use of hazardous materials, particularly heavy metals. ...more

Intel finally cancels Digital TV screen project

In another development in what is becoming a depressing year for Intel, the company has announced that it has finally abandoned plans to get into the digital TV screen business. The company now says that it has formally cancelled the project and disbanded the team working on it. Earlier this year, Intel had already postponed the commercial roll out of Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) technologies which would have held out the promise of a new generation of flat screen televisions. ...more
