AMD boosts Opteron server range

AMD has added two- and eight-way server processors to the 64-bit Opteron range. It claims the Model 252 and 852 processors now represent 'the world's highest performing processors' for servers and workstations. Toshiba ramps up Flash to meet iPod demand

Toshiba is planning to increase investment in semiconductors by 13 per cent over the next 12 months, in part to meet the demand for flash memory for the iPod shuffle. The company's corporate vice president, Masashi Muromachi, said that, 'Demand created by this new machine is so vast that our current capacity can in no way meet their needs.' Yesterday Toshiba opened new plant jointly owned with US firm SanDisk, which, by processing larger, 300mm wafers rather than the standard 200mm, will be able to double productivity at a lower cost. ...more

Tim Berners-Lee is Greatest Briton 2004

The inventor of the World Wide Web has already been been honoured with a knighthood, and last year banked a cheque for a cool €1mn by winning the Millennium Technology Prize. Sir Tim's financial gain was more prosaic this time around, with the trophy for Greatest Briton backed up by ?25,000 at a ceremony in the Royal Courts of Justice. Berners-Lee scooped the prize not just in the Science category but also topped the podium overall, against the likes of Kelly Holmes, fashion designer, Sir Paul Smith, author Philip Pullman, architect Lord Norman Foster, Jane Tomlinson fundraiser and campaigner and journalist Lord Bill Deedes, still UK ambassador for Unicef at the age of 91. ...more
