Lucent develops silicon saviour

Lucent technology's Bell Labs has developed what it claims to be the first all-silicon chips for receivers in base stations. A base station, which receives radio signals from mobile devices such as mobile phones and PDAs, currently houses between ten and 20 gallium arsenide chips. The receiver, created by Jenshan Lin, Olga Boric-Lubecke and Penny Gould, would need only three silicon chips, making it 100 times smaller and far cheaper to produce. ...more

Intel has announced a joint technology and marketing program with Linksys, the maker of consumer wireless and Ethernet products.
