iPod audio problems caused by non-Apple headphones

The iPodlounge has reported that the audio interference experienced on some iPod models is 'mostly' caused by third-party headphones that have a metal base around the headphone base. 'When the metal base comes in contact with the metal case of the iPod, the static and hard drive accessing noises can be heard,' the website says. Earlier this week the site reported that the recently introduced iPod Photo can exhibit the same problems first reported with 4G iPods - where static accompanied by hard drive accessing noises can overlap the beginning of a music track for several seconds. ...more

High Noon approaching for Google and academic publishers

Google is heading for a possible showdown with academic publishers according to an article in the latest issue of Nature. It seems that while Google has committed itself to putting the contents of the world's great academic libraries online, it has yet to get the agreement of the publishers of copyrighted works. Last year, Google announced that it had struck a deal with some of the most prominent libraries in the world including Oxford University's Bodleian Library to digitise the works and offer them online. ...more
