Judge approves Sony's offer over rootkit suit

A US judge granted final approval for the settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought against Sony by disgruntled consumers caught up in last year's DRM rootkit fiasco. The lawsuit, against Sony BMG Music Entertainment, alleged that the XCP technology (SunnComm's MediaMax and First4Internet's Extended Copy Protection, also known as XCP) was harmful to end-users' computers, not least because the cloaking of files in the operating system provided an easy and undetected entry for hackers. Yahoo! shares plunge on news of Panama delay

The Yahoo! share price has taken a knock following news that its new 'Panama' ad system slated for release in the third quarter will not appear until Q4 at the earliest. The delay was formally announced by Yahoo! chairman and CEO Terry Semel in a conference call with analysts to discuss the latest financial results. 'We think this is the right decision for ensuring the most successful commercial launch possible', he said adding that advertisers should pencil in the new system for the beginning of 2007. ...more

AOL-Time Warner post results

The figures will frighten you, the statistics amaze you, but as AOL/Time Warner posts a $1.09bn loss for the quarter, the future looks bright for the Sumo wrestler of media giants. The loss works out at 25 cents a share, and $41m of it was down to restructuring costs in AOL/Time Warner's holdings in high-speed technology venture Road Runner. ...more

China issue changes Microsoft's blogging stance

If you were ever unsure quite how important the 'China thing' is right now, look no further than Microsoft's latest announcement, stating it has changed its policy on blogging. In a speech to government officials and community leaders in Lisbon, Portugal, Microsoft Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Brad Smith, said that blogs on MSN Spaces would no longer be removed outright if they contravened local law, but rather access to them would be restricted from the territory in question. Either way, users in that country won't have access to the content in breach of that country's law, and maybe on another day this slight a change wouldn't make the news. ...more
