Novell sees revenue slump

Novell has reported a slump in revenues of nearly 5 per cent in its latest quarterly figures, resulting in a net profit of just $2m, compared with $24m for the same quarter in 2004. Analysts had hoped the networking, Linux and identity management company would reach the $300m mark in revenues, but Novell's $290m figure sent shares downwards from their close of $6.17 to $6. ...more

Microsoft calls for 'cool apps'

Microsoft has put out a call to developers to build 'cool apps' for the Vista operating system. In an open letter, Jim Allchin, Microsoft's Co-President for Platforms & Services told the development community that Vista represents 'new opportunities on a scale you haven't seen since Windows 95'. Allchin also draws attention to analyst claims   that some 200 million people will be using Windows Vista within the first 24 months of launch. ...more

AOL moves on mobile search

AOL has begun testing a new Internet search tool for mobile devices that will automatically reconfigure pages for small screens. AOL Mobile Search Services employs page translation technology licensed from Israeli firm InfoGin and is a further indication of the company's efforts to move away from its traditional reliance on ISP services. Rival Internet portals, Google and Yahoo! have recently made deals with handset makers and network providers that will make them the first point of call for mobile surfers. ...more

Festive Internet traffic doubles from 2003

British Internet and email use on Christmas Day and Boxing Day was double that of 2003 according to the London Internet Exchange (Linx). Internet traffic through Linx hit a peak of around 45 Gb/sec on Christmas Day and 50 Gb/sec on Boxing Day. Although Linx says the numbers are not directly comparable, the figures are double those for 2003, when the peaks were 25 Gb/sec on Boxing Day and around 22 Gb/sec on Christmas day. ...more

Swedes top IT infrastructure league

Sweden emerges top of the table for the latest survey of IT-aware countries. The Information Society Index study - carried out last week by the analysts International Data Corporation (IDC) - ranks countries by their infrastructure for information technology. Sweden was top in last year's survey, also, and only the presence of the US in fourth place interrupts the grouping of our Scandinavian cousins. ...more
