A new way to program the Web

Yet another programming language? Well the publicity devoted to Curl - the new hybrid of HTML and Java for generating Web content - is explained by one of its backers being none other than Tim Berners-Lee. The man who effectively created the World Wide Web is one of financial backers of the project and $52 million has already been raised as capital by Curl (the company). The language itself emerged from the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) on a government funded research project, and 12 of the original founders are MIT-connected. ...more

A new international forum to debate the future of the Internet has been created. The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) has been set up to debate how to bring the benefits of the Internet to developing countries, identify emerging issues, discuss solutions to the misuse of the Internet and disseminate the use of best practice throughout the world. Microsoft looks at Windows dominance to give its search engine an edge

A source at Microsoft let slip yesterday that Redmond's work on a home-grown search engine is focussed on using Windows to give it the edge. While stalwarts such as Google and Yahoo! continue to add new services to their search engines, both are keeping a close eye on what Microsoft is brewing up in this arena. It may be difficult to see where Microsoft can take search: after all, as deep as its pockets are, there are only so many pages out there to index, and once you've done that, added in a sponsored links feature and so on you're going to end up with something difficult to distinguish from anything else out there. ...more
