Microsoft faces Netscape's communication

Former Netscape CEO James L Barksdale was given the opportunity to blast Microsoft from the witness box today, as the final phase of the antitrust case entered its second day. The New York Times reports Mr Barksdale submitted a testimony to the effect that the current proposed measures to punish Microsoft and reach a settlement would not have prevented Microsoft using anticompetitive behaviour to crush Netscape in the 1990s and therefore would not stop Microsoft from doing it again. Indeed, the crux of the current situation is whether Microsoft is currently pursuing anti-competitive behaviour in other areas, such as mobile devices and instant messaging, and how far the settlement should go to prevent Microsoft from repeating its actions. ...more

Microsoft prohibits Parallels installation of Vista Home edition

Parallels has warned that anyone hoping to run Vista using its Desktop virtualisation software will only be able to do so with the more expensive Business and Ultimate editions of the new Microsoft operating system. Reading Microsoft's new End User Licensing Agreement (EULA), Parallels discovered that it expressly prohibits running the Home Basic and Home Premium editions of Vista in a virtual machine. Under a section headed 'Use with virtualization technologies' the EULA states: 'You may not use the software installed on the licensed device within a virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system. ...more

Microsoft tethers SP1 downloads for Windows Server 2003

Microsoft has released a toolkit that will delay automatic delivery of Service Pack 1 (SP1) for its flagship server product, Windows Server 2003. The SP1 software was released back in March 2005 and made available for users to download - Improved security the focus for Windows Server 2003 SP1. Four months later it will begin to be automatically delivered to server administrators starting 26 July, and this will be done through the various Windows update mechanisms: Windows Update, Microsoft Update and Automatic Updates (AU) mechanisms. ...more
