UPDATED: Steve Jobs has cancer tumour removed

Steve Jobs underwent successful surgery this weekend to have a cancerous tumour in his pancreas removed. In a company-wide email, the Apple CEO wrote, 'This weekend I underwent a successful surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from my pancreas. I had a very rare form of pancreatic cancer called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumour, which represents about one per cent of the total cases of pancreatic cancer diagnosed each year, and can be cured by surgical removal if diagnosed in time (mine was). ...more

Intel to introduce a 'Celeron Centrino'

Intel is planning to introduce a cut down version of the Centrino platform, according to an industry source. A 'Celeron' version of the Pentium M - which, along with the Wireless LAN support and 855 chipset, forms the Centrino platform - would address the value end of the bourgeoning laptop market. While Intel would not confirm the story, from a source close to the company, it comes in the wake of the new Mobile Celeron, introduced yesterday to explicitly give the company more focus on the budget end of the Laptop market. ...more

Microsoft declares dividends all round

Microsoft is breaking with its traditions and paying out not one but two dividends. The cash-rich software giant has announced plans for a quarterly dividend, a four-year stock buyback plan and a special one-off dividend for shareholders. 'As we looked at our cash-management choices, our priorities were to increase our regular payments to shareholders, increase our stock-buyback efforts given our confidence in the company's growth prospects, and distribute additional resources in the form of a special one-time dividend,' said CEO Ballmer. ...more
