Developer tackles cross-platform QuickTime issue

A Scottish Web developer has found a way to write code for playing QuickTime video clips in a Web browser that complies to W3C standards and will work in any browser. Ross Angus's code - developed from an idea from Micjael Zajac - works by nesting two object tags within each other. The first object tag commands Internet Explorer to play the QuickTime movie in an ActiveX friendly manner, which in turn cannot be read the other browsers. ...more

BPI poised to sue AllofMP3

The BPI yesterday told MPs that it plans to sue Russian music downloads website Allofmp3.com. General counsel Roz Groome told the House of Commons Select Committee for Culture, Media & Sport inquiry into New Media and the Creative Industries that the site is illegal in the UK and that downloading music from it is illegal. ...more

Yahoo! signs deal with HP

Internet portal Yahoo! has shaken hands on a deal with Hewlett Packard to offer it as the default search engine in the forthcoming Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. There will also be a co-branded Yahoo/HP Internet toolbar on HP computers. Yahoo! says that its home page will be featured on Compaq branded notebook and desktop PCs in Europe, while in the United States and Canada, HP consumer PCs will come with an Internet browser toolbar that features links to Yahoo! services such as search, e-mail, news and finance links. ...more

Gameboy Advance to top 24 million?

Nintendo, which already dominates the handheld console market with its evergreen Gameboy unit, plans to ship around 24 million of the Gameboy Advance. The new machine is expected to hit the shelves next March, with the initial factory run to begin in January. The company is expected to ship a million units a month, which will rise to 2 million by June and there are to be 10 games released on the same day as the unit. ...more
