Oracle chief puts his money where his mouth is

Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, is so confident of the performance of Oracle's 8i database and 9i application server, that he offered $1m to anyone whose Web site didn't run three times faster after replacing Microsoft's SQL Server or IBM DB2 software with the products. Strangely, the offer didn't include Oracle's 9i database which was announced the same day. Record companies put squeeze on music download pricing

Online music stores are facing pressure from some record companies to hand over a greater share of proceeds from the burgeoning downloads market. In a move that has reportedly angered Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the Financial Times reports that some labels want to increase wholesale prices, arguing that they had initially been set low to stimulate demand. Thousands march in protest of iPod murder

Belgian police have estimated that 80,000 people joined a silent march through the country's capital on Sunday to commemorate the 17-year-old man who was murdered for his iPod last week. Joe Van Holsbeeck died from stab wounds after refusing to give up his music player to two men.
