Drive-by hacking live demo

Think your wireless LAN is safe? Think again. In a live demonstration at London's Internet World conference staff from security company ISS broke into a wireless network, established connections with a test system running off a Buffalo access port and gained remote control of a Windows-driven laptop using the NetBus Trojan. ISS' Simon Edwards (no relation) told the audience that any hacking techniques capable of working across cables will work with wireless networks, and that such infrastructures should be treated as untrusted. ...more

Vista to create 50,000 EU jobs

Microsoft's new Vista operating system will add 50,000 new jobs to six countries in the EU next year. The study, commissioned by Microsoft, studied the effect of the Vista launch in the UK, France, Germany Denmark, Poland and Spain who represent more than two thirds of the EU's IT spend. The survey claims that Vista will generate some €32bn in sales across the Union with Microsoft and its partners investing more than €4. ...more

Starbucks to fill iPods to go

Starbucks may soon start filling iPods as well as coffee cups. It recently opened CD burning stations at its coffee houses in five US cities and found that customers linger longer as a result. 'That experience can go anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes as they continue to browse and listen and make their music selections,' said the head of Starbuck's entertainment division, Ken Lombard, according to the New York Daily News. ...more

Apple sued over iPods damaging hearing

A Louisiana man has filed a lawsuit against Apple alleging that his iPod damaged his hearing. John Kiel Patterson claims that iPods are 'inherently defective in design and are not sufficiently adorned with adequate warnings regarding the likelihood of hearing loss'. He is seeking damages and wants the court to force Apple to make changes to make iPods 'safer'. ...more
