IBM shores up multi-user network security

IBM has introduced security technologies to ensure the network knows who you are. New features to IBM's Embedded Security Subsystem on select ThinkPad notebooks and desktops will allow a user to log onto a network from any access point and be authenticated along with the provision of security credentials such as cryptographic keys and certificates. The Great firewall of China?

Having already placed heavy restrictions on Net use, the Chinese government has gone one step further with plans to build its own separate Internet, according to the government's Xinhua News Agency. The Chinese Internet would be "safer, faster, and handle greater volumes of information", it was announced at a ceremony in Beijing, where a number of companies signed an agreement to form the China C-Net Strategic Alliance. However, as the government recently cracked down on 'subversive' content, making Chinese news sites carry only approved material, terms such as 'safer' are probably in the government's interest, rather than the moral welfare of the Chinese. ...more

Palm marks LifeDrive 'end of life'

Palm has called time on its LifeDrive PDA, the first, and so far only, of its handhelds with hard drive rather than flash memory storage. The device has been tagged 'end of line' on the company's US store. Also references to the Mobile Manager product category have been removed from several places on the Palm website, suggesting that there will be no replacement for the LifeDrive, the only Mobile Manager that the company has released in the less than two years since the new category of devices was introduced in May 2005. ...more

Kingfisher free to buy Dixons

The DTI has announced that it is lifting the restrictions placed on Kingfisher plc that had prevented it from taking control of Dixons plc. Following a Monopolies and Mergers Commission report in 1990 the company gave undertakings were given by Kingfisher that it would not make a bid for Dixons. At the time, the company owned the rival Comet electrical retailer. ...more
