Enhanced performance from smaller chips, promises AMD

While Intel holds court at its Developer Conference in San Jose, AMD has been trumpeting technical innovations of its own - the production of 10 nanometer double-gate transistors. AMD is highlighting its research as the basis for a ten-fold performance leap for the transistors - the basic on/off switches within integrated circuits - that are the basic building blocks of microprocessors. The breakthrough relates to the Fin Field Effect Transistor (FinFET) design, which AMD has now achieved on transistors one sixth of the size of the smallest currently in production. ...more

Home Page shuts down

FileMaker is to discontinue its Home Page Web authoring software on 1 February 2001. Take-up of the software has been small and FileMaker has decided that the large investment required to bring Home Page up-to-date was not commensurate with its limited distribution. FileMaker now intends to concentrate its Web activities around publishing databases on the Internet, allowing users to export content that can easily be incorporated by the leading Web authoring applications. ...more

Microsoft gives first glimpse of new Office

Microsoft will launch the next version of its Office business software suite in the second half of 2006 to coincide with the release of Longhorn, the long-awaited next version of Windows. In an email to company executives, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates said that Office 12 - to give it its working name - will help users 'focus, prioritise and apply their expertise, visualise and understand key data, and reduce the amount of time they spend dealing with the complexity of an information-rich environment'. Arizona settles up with Microsoft

Another US state has been crossed off Microsoft's list, as it reaches a settlement over the violation of anti-trust laws. A financial agreement has now been reached with the south western state of Arizona.
