Novell and IBM speed up Linux apps for SUSE

Novell-owned SUSE is to hand out copies of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and documentation to independent software houses building software on the SUSE distribution of Linux. For its part IBM is to open up nine IBM Innovation Centers in North America, Europe and Asia to enable products to be certified quickly for the SUSE Linux on IBM hardware and software. Microsoft takes on Flash with Silverlight

Microsoft has announced the release of Silverlight, its new cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for interactive media and applications on the Internet. Previously called Windows Presentation Foundation Everywhere (WPF/E), Silverlight is effectively Microsoft's attempt to tackle the hegemony of Adobe's Flash player, which is installed on more than 90 per cent of the worlds' computers and used by a number of the Net's most popular sites, notably MySpace and YouTube. Silverlight uses Windows Media Video (WMV), Microsoft's implementation of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) VC-1 video standard, to provide immediate compatibility with the millions of hours of content already available on the Web, and adds support for interactive video for a multitude of environments, scaling from mobile devices to full-screen HD. ...more

Internet speed record broken at 6.25Gbit/sec

The Internet speed record has been broken again, with data travelling 11,000km between California and Switzerland at 6.25Gbit/sec. Internet2, a group of more than 200 US universities, broke its own record for data transfer using the same IPv4 protocol deployed throughout the Internet. ...more

Analyst Gartner Dataquest has marked another step downwards for the European PC industry with the announcement that the sector has experienced its first ever instance of a decline in shipments.
