GPL version 3 makes DRM progress

A second discussion draft for version 3 of the GNU General Public License has been published. The draft contains a number of revisions, including a clarification of how it will handle DRM technologies. Whereas earlier drafts had been interpreted as outlawing the use of DRM, new wording allows the use of DRM only where it doesn't impact on the freedoms inherent in the GPL enjoyed by licencees. ...more

EC decision on AOL/Time Warner merger goes to poll

The European Commission (EC), the body charged with reviewing the proposed merger of AOL and Time Warner, has decided to delay its decision and plans to poll experts from all 15 of its member countries first. The EC has until 24 October to reach a decision, but industry experts had predicted that a definite decision would be reached much earlier. The EC is also responsible for handling the Warner/Emi merger and a media report suggest that a ruling on both cases will be made at the next main EC meeting on 4 October. ...more

Express Newspapers enters music download market

Northern & Shell, owners of Express Newspapers, is the latest entrant into the crowded UK downloads market, launching separate stores for the Daily Express, Daily Star, OK Magazine and Daily Snack, its online presence. The publishing group has signed up Wippit to provide the stores which will be individually tailored for each publication's readership. Friends of Firefox scheme aims to encourage new users

The Mozilla Foundation is offering to allow its users to become immortalised on the wall of its headquarters in California. Starting last Saturday, dubbed World Firefox Day, in honour of the third birthday of the Mozilla Foundation, the organisation is giving people the chance to become a 'friend of Firefox'. If someone convinces another person to download Firefox, they become a 'friend of Firefox'. ...more
