IBM, Infineon to research new high-speed memory

IBM has teamed up with chip developers Macronix and Infineon to form a joint research project to investigate the possibilities of a new form of computer memory technology known as phase-change memory (PCM). PCM stores data by changing the state of a special material from an amorphous to a crystalline structure, rather than storing data as an electrical charge. 'Every mobile phone user will own a laptop' claims Intel

An Intel spokesman has claimed that one day, 'virtually every mobile phone user will own a laptop', citing the 'insatiable' demand for the Internet as the reason. The striking claim was made by Sean Maloney, the chief sales and marketing officer for Intel, during a keynote speech at HP's Mobility Summit in Shanghai. Sony slashes low end PS3 price and adds HDMI

Sony Corp is slashing the price of its much delayed PlayStation 3 video game console ahead of its November launch in Japan by 20 per cent to 47,600 yen, or about ?215, from an originally planned 59,800 yen, or ?270. The announcement follows the news that Microsoft is to supply an HD DVD unit for its Xbox 360 console for the Japanese market in time for Christmas. European mobile companies queue up for iTunes phone

With Apple seemingly poised to unveil Motorola's iTunes phone at its 'special event' later this week in San Francisco and announce that network operator Cingular will carry the phone in the US, European mobile companies are now queuing up to bring the phone across the Atlantic. O2 is reputedly looking to offer the phone in the UK, while German giant T-Mobile said at a Berlin tradeshow that it plans to carry it. All parties declined to comment. ...more
