Opera CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner is eating his words today as he makes good on his promise to swim the Atlantic if downloads of the company's latest version of Opera hit 1 million by last Saturday. Netgear buys network storage firm

Netgear has completed the acquisition of Infrant Technologies, a networked storage provider. Netgear, best known for its networking products such as broadband modem/routers, paid $60 million for the privately held start-up that specialises in providing enterprise-level storage technology to small businesses and home users. Its ReadyNAS family of networked RAID storage features a proprietary network storage processor and the Linux-based RAIDiator operating system. ...more

Virus man arrested

Police have arrested a Surrey man accused of distributing the first Trojan horse-style virus designed to attack Linux machines. The T0rn virus spread throughout 2001 but caused little disruption or damage. Graham Cluey, senior technical consultant at anti-virus company Sophos told Reuters, that as far as he could recall, it never made the list of top ten most active viruses. ...more

CES: Kodak leads era of email-equipped cameras

Kodak claims to have made a 'quantum leap in the fulfillment of its EasyShare' vision by launching a digital camera that allows users to email pictures directly from the device. It's another example of digital camera makers cutting out the middle man - the PC - so users can distribute pictures quickly and easily. The EasyShare One, described as the first product of its kind, also allows people to view and organise online albums in the Kodak EasyShare gallery, formerly known as Ofoto, and print wirelessly to a Kodak photo printer. ...more

Investigation of Apple Samsung Flash deal confirmed

South Korea has confirmed that it has begun an investigation into accusations that Samsung has charged Apple unfairly low prices for Flash memory chips. 'We are investigating whether Samsung has been unfairly supplying Flash memory chips to Apple at cheaper prices than applied to domestic music player makers,' a spokesman for the country's Fair Trade Commission explained.
