World's largest computing grid goes live

The world's largest permanent computing grid has gone online, giving scientists access to the processing power of 6,000 computers at 78 locations, including 1,000 at 12 sites across the UK. The Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (LCG) is designed to be big enough to handle the 15 petabytes (15 million gigabytes) of data that will be generated each year by the large hadron collider at CERN, Europe's particle physics laboratory In Geneva, Switzerland. YouTube geared for mobile launch next year

The video-sharing giant is building a service to allow users into the site direct from their phones and PDAs. YouTube, the popular online video sharing site, said yesterday that it hopes to launch a service for wireless devices within a year. Intel sees flat market

Chip giant Intel saw its net income more than double in the Q2 2003 compared to the equivalent quarter in 2002 when the IT market was approaching rock bottom. The company has announced profits of $896 million compared to $446 million in 2002. Much of the increased profit compared to the 2002 figures were due to last year's write downs of areas like online services totalling $218 million. ...more
