Adobe cuts the price of education

Adobe is offering a huge education discount on six of its Web and print publishing applications. Comprising InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive and LiveMotion, the 'Education Print-to-Web promotion' costs ?315 and is aimed at students, teachers and lecturers. Sdbot malware sees McAfee issue its 100,000th signature file

Vincent Gullotto, VP of McAfee's AVERT virus response team, described the addition as a 'milestone', although the virus that garnered such an accolade was far from unique. Indeed, it was yet another variant of the Sdbot malware - which allows an attacker to control infected computers remotely. Gullotto said that more than 50 per cent of the additions to the McAfee database so far this year have been definitions for variants of Sdbot, Agobot and other bots. ...more

BT Broadband customers go four times faster for free

As widely expected BT is to provide free speed upgrades for its broadband customers. However, many observers and rivals have been surprised that the company has chosen to quadruple the broadband speeds. The great majority of its 512Kbit customers will soon be connected at 2Mbit Starting from next Thursday (17th February), BT will begin to increase the speeds of most new and existing consumer customers to up to 2 Mb. ...more

Anti-virus companies slam reporting procedures

Antivirus vendors claim that in order to bring virus writers to justice, we are going to need better ways of reporting infections. Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for UK security specialist Sophos said that the current system effectively means you have to look around for victims after you have established that a crime has been committed: 'At the moment, what happens is that the police say "we're not interested until we catch someone", and when we catch someone we'll approach the antivirus companies and ask them whether they have any victims. 'I think that's an unnecessary pressure on the antivirus companies, to keep records of everyone who's been infected by a certain virus. ...more
