iPod thefts have contributed to a significant rise in street crime, according to the police. In some parts of the country the number of muggings was up by 40 per cent in 2004 and by an average of five per cent across England and Wales. Nokia has joined open-source proponents such as IBM, making a promise not to assert its patents against the Linux kernel. Nokia cemented its interest in the open-source operating system Linux at this year's LinuxWorld Summit in New York with the announcement of its maemo project - designed to support its Linux-based platform for the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet.
