SCO investor gets cold feet

BayStar Capital is looking to get its money out of SCO and has asked it to redeem its 20,000 shares in view of alleged breaches of the exchange agreement - SCO says it doesn't think it's in breach of agreement. The company made $20mn on a $50mn investment in the Unix company back in October last year, along with the Royal Bank of Canada. BayStar says SCO - which claims ownership of the Unix operating system - is in breach of certain terms of the agreement and wants to cash in its 20,000 shares, in a letter sent last Thursday. ...more

Yahoo! launches music downloads service

The rapidly expanding Internet portal Yahoo! is set to take on iTunes and Napster with its own music subscription service. The company has announced a beta version of the Yahoo! Music Unlimited service from today. As part of the launch, US subscribers are offered a week's free subscription to the service that claims to have more than one million tracks encoded at 192Kbs available to download and play. ...more

Intel invests in India

Chip giant Intel is setting up a $250 million venture capital fund that is earmarked for investment in India. The company says that it expects that it will be able to provide investment capital on a number of new projects in the subcontinent, in areas such as cellular communications, broadband applications and wireless technologies. The fund is not only looking to provide seed money for local companies, which are behind the rapid expansion of the countries domestic IT industry, but is also looking to fund Indian companies that are looking to expand their markets overseas. ...more

iPod nano set to give shuffle the shove

Apple may be about to phase out or replace its cheapest iPod at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco. The 1GB version of the player is no longer available through the UK version of the online Apple Store and has been out of stock in the US since mid-December. SCO shows its hand on Unix code violations

In the long-running Linux copyright dispute, SCO has announced that it has received US copyright registrations for Unix System V source code. It states that this is a jurisdictional pre-requisite to enforcement of its Unix copyrights. The company is effectively giving notice to users - of specific Linux system - that they will have to purchase licences to avoid the threat of action. ...more
